Justin Ward is an Engineer with Toyota’s Advanced Technology Vehicles (ATV) department at Toyota Technical Center (TTC), located in Gardena, California. TTC, Toyota’s North American R&D center, has been a division of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing, North America, Inc. (TEMA) since 2006. Mr. Ward is responsible for participating in SAE Fuel Cell and Hybrid Vehicle Standards discussions to reflect Toyota's intention to the SAE Codes & Standards groups; collecting information and research related to Fuel Cell & Hybrid Vehicles (FC & HV), including Safety related activities; and evaluating U.S. Suitability of Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles and Gasoline Hybrid models. This includes drivability, FC & HV control under various conditions, analyzing test data and issues on FC & HV control, and creating and confirming countermeasures, among others.

Mr. Ward began his career at TTC in 2001, when he joined the company to support the opening of Toyota's first facility in North America dedicated to Fuel Cell Vehicle research, located at the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP) in West Sacramento, California. In this role, he supported CaFCP PR outreach efforts and technical workgroups.  His specific activities included: drivability and suitability analysis of FCHV in North America.  He was promoted to his current position in 2002.

Mr. Ward began his career in 1999 working for ANUVU Inc. as an Automotive Engineer responsible for integrating ANUVU fuel cell stacks into a conventional automobile, construction of a mock-up of a dedicated fuel cell vehicle platform, as well as carbon fiber component design and development, development of advanced lightweight structural materials, fuel cell optimization, fuel cell system development, and fuel cell vehicle performance modeling. Prior to joining Toyota in 2001, Mr. Ward worked as a self-employed consultant, where he designed two fuel cell stacks for a private company.

Mr. Ward holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California Davis in 1999.  He has been a member of SAE since 2000.

Mr. Ward lives in Orange County, California with his wife, Christina, and two children, Cayla and Samuel.  He enjoys spending time with his family, mountain biking, driving battery-powered remote control cars, and supporting Toyota’s efforts to be one of the leading automotive companies in the world.
