Mr. David L Bowden
Executive Director
ASPO-USA
A lifelong communicator and committed advocate of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, Bowden became conversant with energy topics in 1997, joining the Colorado Renewable Energy Society (CRES), the state's leading clean energy advocacy organization, in 1999. He served on CRES' Board of Directors for 5 years, going on to lead the group as its President in 2004. That year, as a key member of the statewide committee that won Amendment 37, America's first direct vote on renewable energy, Dave worked on fundraising and voter education for the campaign.
Growing up, Dave was exposed to petroleum issues while his father served as an oil industry lobbyist and spokesman in Pennsylvania's state capitol. Now, one generation later, Dave is following in his father's footsteps, but with a somewhat different mission. He became familiar with peak oil topics through meeting ASPO co-founders Steve Andrews and Randy Udall at renewable energy functions, who then invited him to attend ASPO's first World Oil Conference in November, 2005.
Bowden's primary employment since 1980 has been as a TV producer, writer, cameraman, and editor on a wide range of news, investigative, and documentary programs. His credits include 4 years on the staff of PBS' MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour covering major national and international news stories, the newsrooms of three CBS affiliates, PBS Frontline, and regular contributions to a variety of network and cable television shows. Several of his documentaries have received prestigious national awards.
Gradually specializing in science, energy, and health topics in his television productions, Dave saw a need for wider energy education, and in 2005 founded the Sustainable Media Network, which serves progressive companies and organizations by using video and multimedia to advance public and customer knowledge of sustainable practices. The company has sold thousands of copies of its 14 minute DVD "Clean Energy News: Buying a Solar Electric System" to consumers and solar contractors across the country.
In addition to his communication and energy education pursuits, Dave is an avid reader of current affairs publications, an active still photographer, expert downhill skier, ice skater, and has climbed 15 of Colorado's highest peaks. He has traveled to all 50 states and 26 other countries around the world.
Dave has implemented considerable energy efficiency and sustainability measures in his daily activities. Among those are keeping his thermostat low, re-insulating his Denver home, the broad use of CFL bulbs, recycling of almost all household waste, and, most days, walking 3 miles round trip to the ASPO-USA office.
